The SCPA (Persatuan Peranakan Cina Pulau Pinang)

The State Chinese Penang Association (SCPA) is the centre of Peranakan culture in Penang. It was originally known as the Straits Chinese British Association, being a branch of the Singapore-based SCBA. It was established in 1920, some twenty-years after the inuaguration of SCBAs in Singapore and Malacca.

The Penang Peranakan Chinese are different from their Malacca and Singapore counterpart linguistically and also, culturally. They speak Penang Hokkien, which is the Chiangchew dialect heavily influenced by Baba Malay and English. Now known as PHD, Penang Hokkien Dialect is gaining popularity as local poets publish books using the dialect.

The SCPA is headed by Dato’ Seri Khoo Keat Siew, a well-known personality in Penang. Dato’ Seri Khoo is also the editor of Suara Baba, the “voice” of the various Peranakan associations in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. In 1987, he organised the first Baba Convention, to better social relations among the various Peranakan associations and to stimulate new ways of thinking about “Peranakan”.

The Chinese-based culture was modified by Malay world and European influences

Other Peranakan Associations in the region include:

The Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Kuala Lumpur and Selangor ( PPBNKLS)

The Peranakan Baba Nyonya Association of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor was born in a rather interesting way. It was at a symposium entitled ‘The World of the Peranakan Baba Nyonya Heritage of South East Asia’ on 3 Feb 2005 where there was a large gathering of babas and nyonyas in the audience. We were pleasantly surprised at such a strong presence of Peranakan members as well as friends of the Peranakan in KL who were eager to celebrate and promote the Peranakan way of life in the KL and Selangor region.

A group of us then met regularly, formed a protem committee and discussed the formation of a Peranakan association in Kuala Lumpur. On 1 October, the first inaugural General meeting of the PPBNKLS was formed. Since then, we have held regular meetings and occasional functions, as well as the annual Chinese New Year get-together. The association members have also been active and highly visible at the Annual Conventions.

The Association is headed by Dr. Lee Su Kim who is an Associate Professor of English Language Studies at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Selangor. She is the first Nyonya President of the Peranakan associations in Malaysia and Singapore.

The PPBNKLS was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies ( ROS) in Kuala Lumpur on 28 July 2008.

The Singapore and Malacca associations were the first Peranakan Associations, established in 1900 as the Straits Chinese British Association. Gunong Sayang was founded in 1910 and till this day remains dedicated to Peranakan performing arts. The associations in Phuket and Kuala Lumpur, both formed in the 1990s and 2006 respectively, are the latest addition to the fellowship.

Saluton. Great. I am planning to write a book on Baba and Nyonya in Esperanto. Now am looking for sponsorship 😦

Borne in Penang and grew up in the Baba and Nyonya mood. With a sister who named Nya, nyonya and a brother called ah ba, baba. Perhaps, my late father was too thrilled with the Baba and Nyonya. Hope he did not have a mistress in that part of his life. 🙂
